The Pokémon Company has won a $15 million lawsuit for copyright and intellectual property theft against multiple Chinese companies involved in the game Pocket Monster Reissue.
According to Gamebiz, the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court ruled that Pocket Monster Reissue had infringed The Pokémon Company’s copyright by using characters like Ash Ketchum and Pikachu.
One of the six companies involved was ordered to pay over $15 million in damages, while some of the firms held jointly liable are appealing the decision.
IP protection
Pocket Monster Reissue has reportedly generated around $42 million annually. The Pokémon Company initially sued for $72 million in damages and sought a public apology. Following the judgement, he firm stated it would continue to protect its IP.
Earlier this year, mobile gacha game Pokémon Masters EX celebrated its fifth anniversary with in-game updates such as new characters, limited-time events and fresh story campaigns to maintain its spot as The Pokémon Company’s second biggest mobile title.
