Action-adventure game Ghostwire: Tokyo was expected to launch later this year for the PS5 and PC, but developer Tango Gameworks has just announced it now won’t launch until early next year.
The game was revealed back in June 2019 by Tango, with publishing being handled by the then still independent Bethesda Softworks. Tango Gameworks and Bethesda are both owned by ZeniMax Media, which has since been acquired by Microsoft. However, Microsoft is honoring the exclusivity of Ghostwire: Tokyo on Sony’s console which lasts one year, meaning with this delay we won’t see the game on Xbox consoles until some point in 2023.
As to why the game is being delayed, Tango Gameworks explained in a tweet that, “We want to get the game in your hands as soon as possible so you can experience the unforgettable version of a haunted Tokyo that we’ve been hard at work building. At the same time, we’re focused on protecting the health of everyone at Tango. Our new release window will give us time to bring the world of Ghostwire to life as we’ve always envisioned it.”
The world may slowly be returning to normal as more people get vaccinated and the pandemic subsides, but we’ve had over a year of major disruption. It should come as no surprise projects such as this need longer to finish, and after what happened with Cyberpunk 2077, gamers will be happy to see Tango Gameworks opting to take more time rather than rushing out the game this year.
