With the presidential election fast approaching, many Americans are still struggling to choose a candidate. Enter Twitter’s 2020 election hub—a one-stop-shop for accurate information and resources ahead of the Nov. 3 vote.
US users can find the feature at the top of their Explore tab, alongside trending topics, sports reports, entertainment gossip, and COVID-19 updates. Scroll through for the latest news in English and Spanish (in the form Twitter Moments); live streams of major events like debates, a tool for finding your state’s House, Senate, and gubernatorial candidates; and localized announcements.
And, in a first for the microblogging service, the hub includes a series of voter education public service announcements, created using information from nonpartisan government and voting advocacy agencies. The first PSA—highlighting details like where and how to register, requesting a mail-in ballot, and tips for healthy voting—went live this week. More broadcasts will run on Twitter “all the way to election day,” the site said. Subscribing to the series simply requires you to like or retweet this post.
“As elections occur around the world, we’ve seen Twitter serve as the centralized hub for real-time political conversation, resources, and breaking news,” Public Policy Director Bridget Coyne and Senior Product Manager Sam Toizer wrote in a blog post. “But we also know that at times it can be hard to quickly find the reliable news and accurate information people need in order to meet registration deadlines and participate confidently.”
Just last week, the platform clamped down on the spread of misinformation, promising to more aggressively label and hide inaccurate election-related posts. Twitter has also banned political ads and began providing more context to trending items.
