Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft Rumble is making the move to PC after over a year as a mobile exclusive.
The platform expansion will take this tower defence RTS title to PC with a beta test starting December 10th, to be made available via the Battle.net launcher.
Expanding a brand
Warcraft Rumble launched on iOS and Android in November 2023 as the World of Warcraft brand’s first game built specifically for mobile. Set in the Warcraft universe, in the past year, it has grown from approximately 65 characters at launch to over 80 IP representatives today.
Players use a variety of units to attack, defend, conquer kingdoms and more. They can also battle in more than 70 boss fights, designed to take no longer than five minutes each as a streamlining measure tailored to mobile play.
In taking this mobile-built game to PC, Blizzard is looking to make its short-form style a selling point – something to engage with between World of Warcraft raids. By releasing Warcraft Rumble on Battle.net, both titles will be able to run simultaneously on PC – meaning fans will be able to jump back and forth to wherever the action is happening.
It’s currently unconfirmed whether cross-play and cross-progression will be present in Warcraft Rumble’s beta test or at launch, though both features are present in Blizzard’s other popular multiplat title Hearthstone.
Making a mobile rumble
Excluding China, Warcraft Rumble was released globally on November 3rd, 2023, after three months of soft launch and has generated $64.2 million gross to date.
Its largest audience is located in the US, having spent $28.1 million in-game by AppMagic estimates, based on earnings from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.
Germany follows in second with $7.1 million in spending and South Korea ranks third with $4.2 million.
Its absence from the Chinese market has likely impacted Warcraft Rumble’s earning potential considering the franchise’s huge popularity in the region, however a temporary fallout between Blizzard and NetEase disrupted the company’s presence for some time.
Warcraft Rumble’s mobile revenue has declined considerably since launch with monthly earnings dropping 92% in a single year – from $24.6 million in November 2023 to $2 million in October 2024. Whether a PC expansion can grant the game a second wind remains to be seen.
