2023 wasn’t a banner year for sports or racing games, although it did serve up some solid efforts in the form of the new Forza Motorsport, MLB The Show 23, and more. Will 2024 be a better year? That remains to be seen. It’s always hard to predict what the annualized sports titles will deliver, but we do know the TopSpin franchise is returning, and I’d like to see what MLB The Show 24 pitches us after last year’s addition of the exciting new historical Storylines mode. Lace ‘em and/or gas ‘em up, it’s time for Wccftech’s Most Anticipated Sports and Racing Games of 2024…
Note: Only games with confirmed 2024 release dates are eligible for Wccftech’s lists. Stuff that’s only rumored or speculated to be coming is relegated to the honorable mentions.
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 & Switch, Early 2024)
This year’s big entry in the open-world racing subgenre is Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. Set in a 1:1 recreation of Hong Kong, the developers of Solar Crown are promising to focus on density and detail rather than sheer map size this time around. That said, don’t worry, there’s still over 600km of drivable roads. Of course, there’s also going to plenty of sweet rides – Solar Crown focuses on the lavish side of life, with cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and more. Get ready to live the virtual high life.
WWE 2K24 (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 & PS5, Q1 2024)
After the disastrous WWE 2K20 derailed the series, developer Visual Concepts have done a solid job of getting their wrasslin’ games back on track. While still far from perfect, WWE 2K23 was a solid step up over the year previous, and hopefully, we see more improvements in WWE 2K24. What those improvement might be, we don’t really know, but I’m fairly confident the team behind this franchise will continue to reach for that brass ring.
MLB The Show 24 (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 & Switch, Spring 2024)
MLB The Show 23 was probably the best annualized sports franchise release of this past year, adding some significant new features like the fun and informative historical Storylines mode. I’m interested in seeing what Sony San Diego Studio does with the mode this year – what subject or historical period will they cover? The MLB The Show franchise has become complacent in the past, but hopefully, they can score back-to-back hits.
Assetto Corsa 2 (PC, Summer 2024)
When it comes to sim racing, most folks default to popular series like Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo, but if even those aren’t hardcore enough for you? Well, then it’s time to check out Assetto Corsa. Since launching in 2014, the Assetto Corsa series has attracted a rabid fanbase with its realistic racing experience and very active modding scene. Publisher 505 Games and developer Kunos Simulazioni have promised Assetto Corsa 2 is coming in 2024, and yet, oddly, we know almost nothing about the game. Regardless, for hardcore motorsport fanatics this is still the biggest release of the year.
TopSpin 2K25 (Platforms TBA, 2024)
The Top Spin games were a series of well-liked tennis games from the glory era of 2K Sports, but unfortunately, the franchise has laid dormant for more than a decade. Well, just this week 2K announced the series is returning with TopSpin 2K25. We don’t know much about the game at this point, but rumor has it Mafia developer Hangar 13 is in charge, which makes sense as they absorbed 2K Czech, the previous developer of Top Spin. Hopefully, 2K will serve up a few more details soon.
Honorable Mentions and Possible Surprises
Of course, the full slate of annual sports titles will be coming this year, and you never know when one of them will push a little harder and deliver more than usual. Will that be NBA 2K25 this year? Or EA Sports FC 25? Or Madden NFL 25? We here at Wccftech will keep you updated. On the racing front, things are looking a bit thin, but we can look forward to F1 24 and other regular annual releases. As for surprises, maybe we actually get a release date for EA’s new Skate and when’s that EA Sports College Football revival happening? And hey, could Nintendo’s rumored Switch 2 launch with a new racing game or two? Let’s hope!
