Fast food restaurant chain Wendy’s has over 6,500 locations worldwide, but over the next four years, 700 new kitchens are opening that you won’t be able to walk in and order food from.
As the Associated Press reports, Wendy’s is responding to growing demand for food deliveries by opening 700 new delivery-only kitchens (also known as “ghost kitchens”). The new locations will be spread across the US, Canada, and the UK, with the first 50 set to open before the end of the year.
This is good news for people who both like Wendy’s and having their food delivered, but also for DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats who will be handling the bulk of the deliveries from these new kitchens.
Wendy’s carried out a successful test last year in Canada which saw eight delivery-only kitchens open in partnership with Reef Technology. Reef will therefore build and operate these new kitchens for Wendy’s, with Wendy’s President and CEO Todd Penegor stating on an investor call this week that he expects each location to generate up to $1 million in sales per year.
