- Zenless Zone Zero officially reached 50 million downloads within three days of launch
- AppMagic data shows a less lucrative launch than both Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail despite that download deluge
HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero has officially sailed to 50 million downloads and beyond mere days after launch – achieving this mighty milestone in under 72 hours according to the company.
Not only that, the new RPG has generated $24.6 million on Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store in its first five days according to AppMagic estimates, outperforming the combined revenues of predecessors Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail last week.
Over the past week Genshin Impact generated $10.6 million and Honkai: Star Rail generated $11.7 million, meaning neither made the top 10 revenue generators list for the latest seven-day period. Meanwhile, Zenless Zone Zero reached eighth on that list while only in play for five days, behind the likes of Honor of Kings and Monopoly Go! but ahead of the increasingly successful Brawl Stars.
This list, compiled by AppMagic, considers revenue from both Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store, so notably does not include any of Zenless Zone Zero’s earnings on PC or PS5.
A triumphant trilogy
Of Zenless Zone Zero’s $24.6 million revenue so far, 51% has come from HoYoverse’s home territory China. Japan currently ranks second with 25%, unsurprising considering the country’s adoration for RPGs even in a time of decline.
The US rounds out the top three with 8% of Zenless Zone Zero’s total earnings, following the same pattern as Honkai: Star Rail – China leads spending, followed by Japan, followed by the US.
As for Genshin Impact, Japan dominates consumer spending instead, at 34%; this is followed by China’s 28% and the US’s 13%, meaning the same three countries lead spending across this trio of HoYoverse hits.
However, where Zenless Zone Zero has broken new ground in pre-registrations and early downloads, its first five days’ earnings are behind the revenues generated by its predecessors in their same respective launch windows.
Back in September 2020, Genshin Impact earned $35.3 million in its first five days, and was soundly beaten by Honkai: Star Rail’s $55 million over its first five days in 2023.
Zenless Zone Zero’s $24.6 million, then, is a significant step back – roughly half of Star Rail’s debut revenue. This by no means makes the new launch a failure though, having generated more in five days than Supercell’s new Squad Busters made in its first month.
“Buzzing with life”
The team behind Zenless Zone Zero appears content with its early success but hungry for more, having shared in a statement: “Since its release, Zenless Zone Zero has reached 50 million downloads globally. A city that once existed in the hopes and dreams of the dev team has never been as buzzing with life as it is now. Your patience and support have made New Eridu what it is today.
“Of course, to live up to everyone’s expectations and truly become a city of miracles, we are aware that there are still lots of improvements to be made. We encourage all Proxies to provide feedback and suggestions via our official channels.”
To celebrate the milestone, all players were issued 1,600 Polychrome – Zenless Zone Zero’s premium currency used to acquire new characters from the gacha: a formula HoYoverse has successfully dominated.
