The cloud-gaming option on Sony’s PlayStation Now will finally let you stream games in 1080p, starting this week for applicable games.
“The rollout will occur over the next several weeks across Europe, US, Canada, and Japan, where PlayStation Now is available,” Sony tweeted today.
The announcement is good news for PC users who’ve subscribed to PlayStation Now. The $9.99-a-month service lets you stream hundreds of current and classic PlayStation titles on a Windows PC, PS4, and PS5, so long as you have a 5Mbps or higher internet connection.
But for years, PlayStation Now has capped its streaming quality to 720p, which can be maddening if you own a full HD monitor. To obtain higher resolutions of up to 4K, you have to download the title locally, but this only applies to PlayStation 4 and 5 console owners.
The 1080p upgrade may help PlayStation Now better compete with other cloud-gaming services. Most notably, Microsoft is bundling its own cloud-gaming service as a free perk with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which costs $14.99 a month. Ultimate subscribers can now stream Xbox titles to their Android smartphones, and support for PC and iOS is already underway. However, the service has been capping the stream quality to 720p.
Google’s cloud gaming service, Stadia, supports 4K streaming at 60 frames per second. Amazon’s version, Luna, is also working on adding 4K support too.
